Breed Group

The Whippet dog belongs to the hound breed group and whippet is elegant to look and is also called as the snap dog.

Weight

The weight of these dogs range from eleven to twenty one kg.

Height

Males tend to be one to two inches taller than the female dogs and similarly, the weight of males is three to six pounds heavier than the females.

Color(s)

The color may be brindle, black, red, fawn and tigered white or slate blue. These colors may be mixed ones or solid colors

Coat

The coat is smooth and shiny. The coat of this breed is virtually free from dog smell and coat is easy to clean also.

Overview

This dog with tucked up abdomen and deep chest originates has the history of evolving from Greyhounds including Italian Greyhound and Terriers. The name is derived from the meaning of ‘moving quickly’.

Character

The females when reared together, the fighting may occur some times, though get along well most of the times. The dogs are affectionate ones and are superior one in racing etc.

The whippet is an ultimate sprinter and the movements while running can not be surpassed by any other dog breeds in general and the dog has fantastic dexterity and this is a highly appreciable feature.

Temperament

They are the superb trackers against the lure even if the lure is an attractive and will approach the targets with lion heart and good speed. They are capable of reaching high speed in a very short time.

These dogs are capable of moving well with elderly persons and children. It may or may not bark at the strangers.

Care

These dogs are amenable to gastric disorders and upsets. Obesity needs to be prevented among these breeds and adequate exercise needs to be given regularly to this breed of dogs.

Skin needs regular grooming activities, to keep it free from any external parasitic infestations like lice, fleas etc.

These breeds are sensitive to the cold season and hence, needs to be protected by provision of convenient warm clothes suitable for the dog.

Training

Like any other breed, the training is to be given from early age onwards. Male dogs are known to housebreak often.

Activity

Because of non-suspicious nature and trustful activities of whippet, it is not a fit dog to be used as watchdogs. However, whippet is the friendly dog and can move well with other animals and with enormous speed.
