The whelping dog should be allowed to whelp its puppy in a calm environment, preferably in a separate or spare room with no disturbances. During the whelping process, the fetus may be delivered within an hour. However, this time may be a variable feature. Technical assistance is required if more than two hours occurs between successive pups.

Whelping dog

Avoid interested visitors to be near the whelping dog. If so, the dog may not be able to concentrate on her natural efforts of whelping activities. After the head of fetus touches the vaginal roof, the pup is gradually ejected out. The whelping process often involves the biting of amniotic sac and umbilical cord by the bitch. Fetal membranes are consumed by many dogs. If the dog fails to disconnect the umbilical cord and opens up the amniotic sac, then manually assist. Clean the mouth and nose of pup.

Signs of Whelping

The first and foremost sign of whelping include restlessness in the bitch. The dog frequently turns towards the tail region. During whelping process, the mother may glance at the flank region. Many dogs may reveal signs like vomiting, anorexia etc.

The bitch may appear stressed, once it attains the whelping stage. During the whelping process, straining is noticed due to the intermittent contraction of uterine tissues.

Whelping pen

Whelping pen often involves two partitions and one is for the entry of pups, which may move freely in this space, and another is meant for the straining bitch.

The pups freely moving without opening of eyes seek mother’s nipple by sense of olfaction inside the whelping pen that confines both mother and the puppies.

Ready made whelping pens are commercially available. Whelping pen derives always significance in the whelping process.

During the whelping process, well-designed whelping pen is a must for a convenient whelping by the bitch and for the safety of the puppies.

Whelping bed should be made up of materials that are non-edible and should be a disposable one for easy cleaning. This should be a cheap one and needs to be easily available.

Whelping

This may be expected to occur around 58th day of mating. The whelping process is given utmost significance because of the new outcome of offspring from their home reared bitch. The whelping process if delayed beyond 65th day, then consultation of a veterinarian is a must.
