Canine Whelping and Weaning- the Hidden Facts
Canine whelping and puppy weaning are the two important processes in a dog’s breeding process. As an owner of a dog, you should aware about these two processes how to carry out these things without any fuss. The whelping process in a dog is nothing but giving birth to puppies that usually occurs after a gestation period of 65-70 days. In general, the bitches will seek a place with no human intervention for successful whelping process. Sometimes they will try to build nest in your garden by digging the ground. You should keep this point in your mind to give a calm and better environment for the occurrence of whelping process without undue stress to your bitch. The whelping process lasts for 2-3 hours. If your bitch experiences prolonged whelping process, immediate veterinary intervention will ease the situation. You should provide adequate nutrition to the lactating bitches for the betterment of the puppies. Additional calcium in the diet favors sufficient milk to her babies. You should not handle the pups unnecessarily up to 15 to 20 days old. The new borne pups open their eyes after 2 weeks. Once the pups opened their eyes, they will tend to play with their littermates to make better bonding among themselves. You can easily recognize the dominant puppy by the way it is taking milk from its mother. It is proved that the dominant pups are usually fond of fore quarters of his/her mother. You can plan puppy weaning after 4-5 weeks of age or once they attain 1.5 kg body weight. As an owner of a bitch you can act as a foster mother by feeding the pups with milk and other nutrients for its well being after weaning the pup. As a pet owner, you should take care of the pups like anything and also provide milk whenever they call you for feeding them. Moreover you should teach them how to behave properly with you and a stranger. If you want to give the excess pup to your dog loving friends, you can give him at the age of 6-8 weeks. If you are going to rear the pup yourself, then seek a proper housing. After first week of weaning, you can house your pups in your house itself. You can shift the pup to new separate place after it gets accustomed to the situation. The place where you are going to keep the pup should be in such away that it could easily call the owner whenever it feels separation anxiety. You should deworm the pups every month from the date of weaning until it attains 6 months old.
