Breed Group

Irish terrier belongs to terrier breed group. Irish terrier is the oldest of terriers.

Weight

The body weight of the IR may be about 11-12 kg.

Height

The IR should not be more than 48 cms when measured at withers according to the view expressed by many persons. However, it is not uncommon to encounter dogs reaching a height of 53 cms and the bitches with a height of 50 cms.

Eighteen inches shall be quoted as the ideal height in many cases.

Color(s)

The tail which is forwarded over the skull is slightly darker in color than the rest of the coat. However, the dog is with the color of golden red or red wheaten or wheaten.

The tail should start up quite high..

A small white colored patch is allowed on the chest but on the rest of the body regions.

Coat

The animal apparently is seen with red colored coat. This is because of frequently occurring poor expression of wheaten colored coat. The outer part of the coat which is a double layered one should be wiry and straight, many times.

The inner part of the coat called undercoat also should be red. The legs have longer hair materials but not so much as Wire Fox terrier.
The properly trimmed IT should have some 'furnishings' on head and legs.

Overview

The IR has the Country Cork, Ireland as the place of origin. However, though it was quoted in the paintings of 1700s. However, during the year 1800 only, this dog had become so famous in England.

Character

Because of the docile nature when compared to many dogs, the dog is ideally suited to the apartment type of living places.

Care

Fine tooth comb should be used to remove the dead hair materials from the double layered coat. It is easy to groom the double layered coat but grooming needs to be done in a specified place only.

Further, in general the shedding of hair materials is somewhat rare in this breed. Plenty of exercise in a systematic manner should be given on a daily basis.

You have to accept the fact that this dog is an active one, in general. This is a very healthy breed and is not amenable to hereditary disorders, in general.

Training

In general, daily fast walk is a better form of exercise to these dogs. Trained dogs of this breed are admired by many persons.

Activity

The activities reveal that the Irish terrier is an independent dog. Irish terrier has more pleasing activities whenever it taken for the extermination of otter or den animals.
