Overview
Nineteenth century German hunters required
dog that should have the pointed nose and is capable of an
efficient tracking and hunting. Accordingly, these dogs are
developed and can retrieve the prey or feather or fur from
both land and water.
These dogs are notable for their excellent
following characters behind the hunters or the owners.
Character
GSP may not be fit for apartments because
many times, these dogs need vigorous type of exercise in the
form of running, jogging etc. These dogs are more intelligent
and are affirmative in the activities.
Many times, it is independent and is bold
also. Males have more outgoing characters than the females
and are more efficient hunters also, when compared to females.
Temperament
These dogs are very efficient hunters. Even
without owner’s instructions, some times they move for
hunting. When given proper training from early age, they become
the excellent hunters.
Care
These dogs need constant checking of ears
because ear infections seem to be the commonly encountered
ones. Some dogs may have thick and large nipples and are considered
as normal features in them. Hip dysplasia is to be taken care
of frequently.
Many dogs may have skin problems. The GSP
are prone for epilepsy and wounds due to the colonization
of bacteria in oral mucosa from the hunted prey species.
GSP may drink lot of water and hence water
should be available at all times and take care of the dehydration,
which occurs frequently in this animal.
Presence of thick saliva and strongly smelling
urine are considered as signs of dehydration in addition to
the lusterless coat.
Training
The dogs of this breed need excellent training
in a systematic manner. If the training is not given properly,
the dog may have aberrant behavior, frequently.
Activity
The activities are excellent and are best
tracking dogs and their activities are superb even in water
during the hunting events.
