Get
to Know Artificial Respiration
If artificial respiration
is required, first open the dog's mouth and check for obstructions;
extend his tongue and examine the pharynx. Clear his mouth
of mucus and blood and hold the mouth slightly open.
Mouth-to-mouth resuscitation
involves holding the dog's tongue to the bottom of his mouth
with one hand and sealing his nostrils with the other while
you blow into his mouth. Watch for his chest to rise with
each inflation. Repeat every 5-6 seconds, the equivalent of
10-12 breathes a minute.
How to Carry the Affected
Dog?
This is an important emergency pet care.
If the veterinarian cannot come to you, try to improvise a
stretcher to take the dog to him. To carry
a puppy, wrap him in a blanket that has been folded into several
thicknesses.
If he is in shock, it is better to pick him
up by holding one hand his chest, the other under the hindquarters.
This will keep him stretched out.
It is always better to roll an injured dog
than to try and lift him. If you find him lying beside the
road after a car accident, apply a muzzle even if you have
to use someone's necktie to make one.
Send someone for a blanket and roll him gently
onto it. Two people, one on each side, can make a stretcher
out of the blanket and move the dog easily.
Emergency pet care-
Resting a dog
If no blanket is available and the injured
dog must be moved, try to keep him as flat as possible. So
many dogs' backs are broken in car accidents that one must
consider that possibility. However, if he can move his hind
legs or tail, his spine is probably not open. Get medical
assistance for him immediately.
It should be mentioned that unfortunate car
accidents, which can maim or kill your dog, can be avoided
if he is confined at all times either indoors or, if out-of-doors.,
in a fenced-in-yard or some other protective enclosure.
Never allow your dog to roam free; even a
well-trained dog may, for some unknown reason, dart into the
street-and the result could be tragic.
If you need to walk your dog, leash him first
so that he will be protected from moving vehicles. Then you
can avoid any emergency pet care- you know- Prevention is
better than cure!
