FAQs-DOG EATING CHOCOLATES

Can I feed my dogs with chocolates?

Dog eating chocolate. Is it not a surprise? Not at all. Dog is our pet. Majority of the human population loves this animal. The children like these animals more than the adults as the dogs play with them and reciprocate the love and affection shown to them.

In general we tend to give the dog what all we eat. At times the children may feed the dog with chocolate. This is serious. Chocolate should never be given for dogs. It is nothing but a poison for them.

We need to remove the chocolate from the body of the dog as early as possible. If we delay, the Theo bromine [from the chocolate] will circulate in the blood and may destroy the gastrointestinal tract. The moment the dog is given chocolate by mistake, we need to induce the animal to vomit.

Immediately after this we need to give activated charcoal. The charcoal has the ability to absorb the toxin. Once this is done, the ill effects of the poison [chocolate] is reduced a great extend. These things can be done at home as a first aid. It is always better to have a first aid kit at home if we are a pet lover [dog] and have a mischievous child.

To make the animal to vomit we can administer 3% hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide should be given little by little once in fifteen minutes till the animal vomits.

Syrup Ipecac can be tried as an alternative to hydrogen peroxide. Syrup Ipecac can be purchased at all pharmacy .we don’t need doctor’s prescription to buy this syrup.

After the induced vomit, activated charcoal mixed in water must be given to the dog as mentioned earlier. Branded charcoals are also available. One such is toxiban activated charcoal. In this brand, the charcoal is in fine powder form. This absorbs many poisonous chemicals and prevents them from damaging the parts of the body of the dog.

This charcoal not only binds the Theobromine but also analgesics, depressants, herbicides, rodenticides and organo- phosphates.

In case of dog eating chocolate, it is essential to note the type of chocolate, the quantity of chocolate consumed, and the time of consumption of the chocolate.

This information will help the veterinarians to treat the animal in a much better way. If the dog had consumed more chocolate that too, long time back [several hours], then the dog may get seizures or at times can go to coma stage also.
