Breed Group

These dogs have elongated body and long snout belong to the breed group called Hound. Three Dachshund varieties are there comprising long haired, wire haired and short haired ones. All these Dachshund varieties are bred in many countries.

Weight

The dog may have eleven to thirty two pounds as body weight. Always monitor this periodically.

Height

Generally five to nine inches will be the height of this animal. The lesser height is the one for which many children like this breed.

Color(s)

The color(s) may be cream or solid red. However, tan and chocolate or tan and fawn or tan and gray may be noticed in this dog. Eyes are oval and dark red or brownish black.

Coat

The coat may be a long one or a wiry one or a short one. However in Dachshund with wiry hair, the hair materials are wiry and long also. The coat may be shiny one and is glossy often. The rich color is highly preferred by children in particular.

Overview

These dogs are used constantly to hunt badgers and the history revealed that the long body and snout help to dig the burrows and thereby to drive away the badgers.

Similarly these animals are known to drive away the otters and foxes from their dens. Germany is the more associated country with this dog.

Character

These are lively and obedient but some times refuse to obey. They are the good dogs to travel with. Dachshund moves well with children and older persons.

Temperament

Some times mischievous and is curious also. Long haired variety is calm in nature when compared to other two varieties. These dogs love to be with people and hence, is admired by all.

Care

Since this dog is comparatively lengthier, this animal needs a constant care of skin. The lice infestation and tick infestation need to be checked always.

Further, if any hair loss is noticed in a patchy manner over the body, fungal problem is to be given more emphasis.

This may bite if provoked. Since these dogs are more prone for obesity, more care is required in feeding schedules.

Training

Since these breeds are stubborn often, a gentle type of training is required and never subject them to any harsh method of training and if done, it may try to bite the persons offering training.

Activity

Dachshund dogs are more playful in nature. But, at the same time goes moody also. When reared and trained in a systematic manner, Dachshund becomes an excellent pet to the owner.
