The Boston Terrier dog breed originated in Boston, Massachusetts in 1870 by mixing English Terriers and English Bulldogs. The first Boston Terrier was named Hooper’s Judge.

The American Bull Terrier Club was organized in 1889 by owners of this newly bred dog; however they were met by opposition from Bull Terrier and Bulldog owners who did not believe that it was just to use the same name and status as their breeds. The club changed its name to the Boston Terrier Club.

First, crossbreeding produced unpredictable results and it took years of trials before consistent results were achieved. The Boston Terrier is a small dog with a square shaped head and jaw, a stout nose, and eyes set far apart. His stature is short due to short legs and his tail is found low on his backside. His ears are erect and found on the outer edges of his skull. His nose is rather wide and dark. The mouth and front of his torso are usually white.

Boston Terriers are usually black and white, reddish black, or brindle and white. They are easily recognized because of their contrasting markings. Grooming is kept to a minimal due to them not shedding.

These friendly dogs make great companions. Many single people own them because they are social dogs. Also, they can live in apartments due to their small size. Boston Terriers are tolerant of children and can be a great family pet.

They are easily trained. They do not mind being kept inside. Keeping this breed indoors is advisable because of sensitivity to changing temperatures and skin ailments.

The Boston Terrier is loyal and loving. They make reliable watchdogs due to alertness and quick response time. A Boston Terrier will also stand strong against intruders, despite its size. They are up to any challenge. However, they do not interact well with other breeds and tend to be rather aggressive.

Moderate exercise and play is important for this dog breed. Younger puppies tend to have more energy and want to play often. It is important to walk your dog regularly for his health. Because of this breed's respiratory problems, don't make them exert too much effort.

Small Boston Terriers weigh about 6.8 kg or 15lbs. Medium sized ones weighs 6.8-9 kg or 15-20 lbs. Heavy Boston Terriers weigh 9-11.3 kg or 20-25 lbs. The average height is 31 to 38 cm or 12 to 15 inches.

Health problems frequently seen in Boston Terriers are thyroid problems, respiratory problems, skin allergies, and eye problems. They may experience wheezing, especially in hotter climates. A Boston Terriers life expectancy is 15-20 years.

The Boston Terrier breed was recognized in 1893 by the American Kennel Club.
