Airedale Terrier Dog

Breed Group

The Airedale Terrier belongs to hound breed dog. Airedale Terrier dogs will show little tolerance to other dogs, in general.

Weight

The AT has the body weight in the range of twenty three to forty five Kg. This is the largest of the Terrier group of dogs.

Height

The dog should measure approximately twenty three to twenty six inches. Bitches are less tall than the male dogs of this breed.

Color(s)

The color of the eyes should not be white but should be a dark colored one.

Coat

Curly or soft coats are not much desirable in this breed. Though the undercoat is soft and short, the outer coat is wiry, harder and short.

Overview

This dog has originated from Airedale, which is located in Yorkshire of England. Further, AT is also called as the Waterside Terrier because this dog was earlier bred only to hunt the animal like otter.

Character

This animal has high level of watchdog and guard dog capabilities. Hence, this is being used as companion dog for blind persons. Herding characters of this animal is really appreciable by many persons.

Temperament

The dog is intelligent, responsive, outgoing and the courage is admirable. However, the dog is not aggressive though it is alert always.

This dog actually loves to chase other smaller animals. This is a strong-minded dog and is highly useful as hunting and watching dog.

Care

The skin and coat needs constant care against the parasites especially the ticks, lice and flea. Regular grooming activities need to be carried out in order to keep the clean status.

A small knife with small-serrated edge is much useful in the removal of dead or loose hair materials. Much care is to be taken during such grooming actions.

If unlimited feeding schedules are adapted, then the dog may get affected by obesity and hence, more care is required in the feeding schedules as well as provision of adequate exercise.

Training

The trained AT are highly preferred ones than the other dogs of this same breed. However, training needs to be provided from early age onwards.

Training should not be given when the animal is on full stomach after the feeding activities. Positive reinforcement type of training is highly preferred by many trainers for this type of dogs.

Activity

The level of activity in case of Airedale Terrier is high but Airedale Terrier dogs are fearless comparatively.
