Akita Dog

Breed Group

The Akita dogs are belonging to the working group of dogs. Akita is a lovable dog.

Weight

The female dogs often have the body weight ranging from sixty five to one hundred and ten pounds. However, the male dogs have the body weight in the range of eighty five to one hundred and thirty pounds.

Height

The female dogs may have the height of twenty three to twenty six inches, whereas the male dogs have the height of twenty five to twenty eight inches.

Color(s)

Pure white and sesame colors are commonly used, in addition to the colors like red and brindle.

Coat

This is a double coated animal. The outer coat is hard and stands often off the body and the inner coat is adhering to the body and is soft.

Overview

Akita is considered as national dog of Japan for many centuries and is even considered as a national asset by many persons.

During the world war II, the population of Akita dogs got reduced in numbers and this happened mainly due to the lack of food during the war periods.

In Japan, this was used to hunt boards in the free ranging areas and the wild bears.

Character

Akita is a faithful dog and is highly watchful in character. This is a highly confident animal which loves swimming due to the webbed structure present in the limbs. This dog is a dominant type of dog and is not getting well with other dogs.

Temperament

Akita is not suitable to the owners who are submissive. This dog is highly territorial in nature and may not get along well with other dogs.

It tries to charge at the strangers and are highly wary of the strangers. The barking activity is not a frequent one for this dog. Only when required, the dog will bark. Otherwise, the dog is a calm dog when compared with other breeds of dogs.

Care

The skin status needs to be kept free from excessive dirt or any external parasites like fleas, ticks or lice. The hair materials around the paw regions need to be trimmed in order to keep the webbed structure of limbs visible.

Training

If left uncared, the dog may develop some unwanted behavior. Training should be given by a trained person.
If Akita dogs are properly trained by socializing with other animals or the persons who are well known to the owner, then the dog becomes friendly to them.

Activity

The Akita dogs are smart in activities and are highly affectionate and Akita love their owners.
